Gen-I, with their new smoko room

In 2007, Gen-I participated in the Quick Steps for Sustainability programme, and were able to
identify some practical actions they could take to be more sustainable.
With a number of keen staff on board to help things along, this IT and telecommunications services business has been
able to implement a number of actions to reduce their eco-footprint.
The recycling of cardboard has been expanded to include all domestic recyclables, as well as toner cartridges. A
recycling bin was set up in the smoko room, and paper recycling boxes were made available for staff to use at their
desks. To support this initiative, the number of rubbish bins in the building was also reduced.
Gen-I staff do their best to encourage each other, and their stakeholders, to be sustainable. Engineers have brought
cardboard back from their client's premises to make sure it is recycled, recycling facilities were provided at the
company's annual golf day and emails include a footer that discourages unnecessary printing. The business has also
looked into options for recycling computers, parts and cables, and the potential to offer this service to customers.
Staff have designed "switch-off" labels for lights, formed an environmental team and "eco-tips" are emailed around
the organisation. An in-house recognition system makes sure that good environmental actions are recognised and rewarded.
The use of resources, such as electricity and diesel, was graphed during the Quick Steps programme, and the heating
system was subsequently changed from a diesel burner to heat pumps.
